People in a relationship don’t always see eye to eye with their partners. Couples will usually argue about whether or not to have a TV in the bedroom, money management issues or house chores. But Lash and I have yet another thing worth discussing: Food!
We squabble over almost everything from how much seasoning to add to the noodle soup to whether to order Chinese or Italian food. As small as this issue may be, we never seem to click on the same level when it comes to that one question… “What should we have for ______ *insert relevant meal here*.”
For instance, my typical lunch idea would be a sandwich or a feta salad but Lash likes rice and side dishes better. I enjoy cereals, pancakes or waffles for breakfast and he’d rather have bread, butter and jam! I can’t go without fruits and veggies while the only vegetables Lash would eat are the itty bitty lettuce leaves and thin slices of tomatoes in his burger. I prefer whole wheat bread but he says whole grain foods are crap. Dark chocolate and Hershey kisses are some of my favorite sweet snacks. On the other hand, Lash thinks gummy bears, jellybeans and candies are the very best. His perfect pizza would be overloaded with spicy sausages, savory ham, chicken chunks and tangy pepperoni all over creamy Mozzarella cheese. My ideal pizza toppings would be green peppers – lots of them – mushrooms, onions, corn, tomatoes and ham. And the list goes on!
Spats over eating out – where, when, how we do it – are just as likely to happen and choosing a place to go out for dinner can take hours! Lash eats dinner early, usually around 7 p.m. I prefer to eat later, 8 or 8.30 p.m. He likes to keep it simple and the eatery just around the corner is all right for him as long as it’s good food. Me? I enjoy fine dining in posh restaurants. Entrée, main course and dessert. That’s my thing! It’s ok, you can say it. I’m a spoilt little brat!
We’ve been together for 4 years and yet we still have to figure out some of each other’s eating habits.
Me: How can you possibly prefer ready-to-cook vegetable soup mix over a hearty bowl of homemade soup?
Him: I don’t get it. You can’t go without your steaming mug of green tea every night??
Yes, we have different culinary tastes and eating habits but over the years we have learned to compromise. Sometimes we would go out for burgers and fries at the nearby eatery. At other times, we would plan a dinner date at a fancy restaurant. Often when I least expect it, Lash would suggest we have grilled cheese and ham sandwiches for lunch. And I eventually got used to eating rice during the day. Now I’m more than happy to share a plate of biryani with him over lunchtime.
But just so you know, we might have come to some sort of agreement over food politics, however, we still need to work on a few things. See? Any attempt by me to convince him to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in his diet has utterly failed! But I’m not giving up yet!
