Of food and first experience
Nov 22nd, 2009 by Angele
I hate the thought that the weekend is almost over. Those 2 days passed by so quickly and I barely had time to rest. We had a barbecue party on Saturday night. I just love those house parties with loads of food!
I took a few shots while the guys were busy grilling chicken, sausages, lamb, prawns…

We also had assorted salads and gratin dishes but by then I was too hungry to even bother about pictures! *ahem*
And we ended with mignardises. Hmmm, I’m so in love with those delightful sweet tid-bits that tantalize your taste buds.

They tasted heavenly and I gulped down so many of them. What can I say? Those little delicacies were just too hard to resist!
This weekend I also had my first experience with raw fish. I have had Japanese food before but I was never tempted with sushi, sashimi or whatever the names. So far I had only eaten tempura and teriyaki dishes. Just like everyone else out there who hasn’t tried sushi, I immediately dismissed the thought of even trying to think it was good. But somehow this weekend I decided to give it a try. The meticulous presentation of the sushis was impressive!

First bite and I wasn’t really sure what to think. The taste of it in my mouth was definitely an odd feeling, but it wasn’t disgusting or smelly as I thought it would be. In fact, I tried a variety and my favorite was definitely the salmon roll. So I guess I can say that my first attempt at eating sushi was a successful experience! One thing I’ve learned is that the soy sauce, pickled ginger slices and wasabi along with the wide variety of fresh and creative sushi rolls are crucial to the joys of the authentic sushi experience.
Another weekend came and went. How did you spend your weekend?
*sigh* I’m already mentally preparing myself for a long and stressful work week. Have a good week guys. 5 days to go till next weekend! How depressing is that? T_T

Oh wow, you really pamper yourself, hehe. I had fried duck today, so I’m quite full. If I haven’t had such an abundant lunch, I’d be drooling all over the keyboard, hehe

OMG I freakin LOVE sushi!
where did you find sushi that actually looks like Sushi in mru???
i only know you can get it in Sakura and Wakame
To MKL,
This weekend was all about indulging myself with food and not feeling guilty
To Kit,
Totally! It was everything about intense pleasure and ecstasy. I’m still referring to food eh! (*^*)
I’ve never tried sushi before. Been always nervous since I don’t like salmon! I prefer prawns, lobsters, mussels, and crabs to salmon. Some friends are having a cook-out today so hubby and I are heading over in an hour or so.
Last night we had a blast at the recently-opened nightclub: Rush. Came home this morning around 4 a.m! I woke up around 9.30 a.m. Had breakfast and went back to sleep. Now I’m up and ready to go eat the feast which is being prepared! Ah food….*sighs* better than sex… LOL

To Manju,
We didn’t buy the sushis. They were homemade. My aunt knows this Japanese chef who used to work at Sakura and she hired him for the evening because she wanted some Japanese delicacies at the party she was hosting. You know, just like in those “Chef à domicile” culinary shows where you can hire a personal chef for a dinner party or other special event? Hahah that’s pretty cool, huh?
Arrete fer dimoune faim
Kot mo part?
Ahh ok! yep, really cool! looks divine
i need to find out where they sell the sushi rice, sake and nori sheets and try making some at home ^^
Sushi and sashimi are definitely an acquired taste. I did not like them at all the first time I tried them, but eventually got used to them to the point where I actually enjoy them.

To P T,
Just like you, sushi has never appealed to me. But then, everyone seemed so excited about it that I just had to try. I started with the easy ones like tuna and salmon. For sure, the taste was unusual but I didn’t find it disgusting. I ate a few varieties but left out the eel. That one seemed nasty! Hahaha!
To ¥@$#,
Oops! Tou ine finiiiii
To Manju,
I don’t know where you can find those ingredients for sushi. Must be at some specialized grocery stores
I’ll let you know if I get hold of sushi rice and nori sheets in Mtius
. I’m also kinda tempted to make some at home! Omg, I think I’m actually starting to like sushi!
To Patrick,
Having sushi for the very first time is quite weird. You never really know what you are eating and how it actually tastes.
But I’d also say that eating sushi is an experience or even a ritual that involves all your senses. Admire the colors and presentation, inhale the aromas and feel the different textures in your mouth while you eat every piece.
To Morinn,
And it’s just the beginning! Woohoo!!! There’s gonna be so many parties now that we’re almost at the end of the year
wow wow WOW!!! Your post makes we want to have a barbeque party right now! (even though it’s 10 in the morning and winter!)
I just keep scrolling up and down looking at all the delicious offerings of food! It all looks so good!
Sushi is great too! You have to have it with all the sauces (wasabi including!)
As Kit rightly said “this is food porn!” !

To Jaimie,
I never heard of chicken karaage before. I had to google it! LOL!
Mo ti dir zamais mo pas pou manze poisson cru mais finalement mone jette moi à l’eau! Au debut gout la ti imper weird mais apres ti korek
To Pinknpurplelizard,
Yeahh great idea! I didn’t think about it at all and yet I remember seeing people making grilled fruit skewers on those culinary shows!!! Grilled fruits must taste so good. Thanks for the tips! I’m gonna make grilled fruits a trend this summer (^_^*)
To jemima,
*blush*
And I haven’t even posted all the food pics!
To Nav,
Feast your eyes on these goodies
When I first had sushi the other day, my cousin told me to be careful with the wasabi because it was “hot”. I didn’t listen (as usual!) and gosh! Wasabi has such a distinctive taste. My eyes watered and I made the strangest face according to my cuz! Hahaha.
omg! Food 0.0 I love food posts! we haven’t had bbq for a long time, hopefully soon ^^
Raw salmon is definitely “un gout acquis”! I used to hate it, but now I can’t spend a week without having some. It helps that the sushi place at my uni sells delicious fresh ones
You should try cream cheese + pineapple ones, they’re soooo good!
Where else do they sell sushis btw? Last time we were home, le bf & I went to that sushi place at Caudan but didn’t like it at all :S

Jaimie´s last [post] ..Hide and Seek…
To vali,
Cream cheese and pineapple sushi?? o_O That’s kind of an unusual combination but it sounds interesting. I like cream cheese, I like pineapple and I’m starting to like sushi. So yeah, why not?
That sushi bar in Caudan is expensive and the sushis aren’t very good from what I heard. In Mauritius you don’t have many Japanese restaurants. There is Sakura in GrandBay and Wakame at Pointe aux Cannoniers. Oh and you also have Niu in the Ruisseau creole complex.
To day-dreamer,
I knowww! So mouthwatering eh?
To Jaimie,
Oh yeah mone blier to ti allergic ek seafood! Mais o moins to kav manze poisson
Which reminds me that I have to make steamed fish like the one Dain prepared the other day! Depi ki tone cause moi sa poisson la mo p gagne envie manzer! XD

yum for BBQ prawns… and I didn’t like sushi and any raw fish either, but since a few years, I’ve started to learn to eat it, and now I’ve eaten so much sushi, that I’m sick of it haha!

Forgot to say that you can sprinkle some cinnamon sugar after the fruit has been grilled. Alternatively, enjoy it with ice cream or a nice sauce Anglaise.

That’s a lot of sushi! I like my mine with soy sauce only. The wasabi and ginger are too strong for my liking. As for raw fish, I like raw salmon …

To azra,
Is it easy to make sushi at home? I’m quite tempted to prepare some homemade sushis
Hmm, yummy I love Indian food and earlier this afternoon, I was telling the boyfriend that we should go out for Indian cuisine soon because I was craving for naan, butter chicken and paneer kofta!
To Kit,
Mea culpa?
But you should have posted some pics! Hahaha. I’m having a thing for sushi pics as well! Sushis are so pretty and colorful! Lol
To toothfairynotes,
The grilled prawns were to die for! They marinated in garlic, lemon and parsley and were served with spicy garlic butter. *drooling*
I’m a sushi novice and there are still a few varieties of sushi that I haven’t dared to try yet. For instance, the eel sushi wasn’t very appealing but my friends said it tasted nice. Lol. When I think of an eel, I see an ugly slimy fish-snake and I can’t get this image out of my head!!! (o_O)
To Pinknpurplelizard,
I’m not particularly fond of cinnamon sugar. Weird thing is that I love the smell of cinnamon but I don’t really like the taste! Hehehe
But the combination of warm fruits and ice cream sounds perfect! Yayyy, tastes like summertime!
To ¥@$#,
Pas grave!! Next time ena barbecue, mo save 2-3 boutes pou toi ek mo send par DHL
To Carine,
Oh yeah, one of my favorites was the salmon. Usually I don’t eat salmon but surprisingly, I enjoyed the salmon in the sushi rolls and sashimi.
Angele, yea its not too bad making the sushi at home. you have to use the sushi rice cooked as per the packet and u need the rice vinegar or cider vinegar. The trick is trying to roll it, using the rolling mat, which you cover in cling film to prevent it from being messy. I have the recipe somewhere, i will scan it sometime and send to you. But yea its a great experience with a few girls around.
azra´s last [post] ..Great Weekend
To azra,
I love to try new recipes! But at home I’m the only one who eats sushi. I’ll have to gather a few sushi lovers and then we can have a mini sushi party
Je ne suis pas très sushi mais c’est joli à regarder. C’est presque décoratif! Tu t’es surement bien régalé?

on duty for some company event they are sponsoring from Sat 10pm to Sun 8am. Came home and sleep until 5pm sort of.. so i don’t remember having Sat and Sun. oh.. btw.. the chicken look nice and tasty!
To bosscat,
You actually had to work last weekend? That sucks. Hopefully you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the coming weekend
Heheh yeah the chicken was really juicy and tasty. Just the way I like it
omfg, this is making me soo hungry! I haven’t had breakfast/lunch yet
is it possible for food to materialise from the monitor? lol
To Meli,
Sadly I don’t think food can actually materialize from the monitor
But cheer up because you can still eat with your eyes and good thing with virtual food is that you don’t put on weight! Nice, right?
The sushi looks great. Thanks for the sharing.
