A glimpse of Singapore
Jun 25th, 2010 by Angele
I haven’t told many people but I was on vacation for a few weeks in Singapore. Just got back yesterday. It feels good to be home but I’m sad that the holidays are over already. Now it’s back to reality!

I was in Singapore mostly for the Great Singapore Sale. GSS is a shopper’s dream come true – Orchard road, Marina bay, Bugis – endless shopping, dining, entertainment and a one-stop haven for shopaholics! Just hit the road and visit the giant malls lining the streets and you’re on for an exciting shopping spree!! Great deals and amazing bargains are everywhere so no need to break your piggy bank!
During my holidays I embraced shopping as my drug of choice and the thrill of shopping became so addictive (@_@).
Yet another amazing experience besides the frenzy shopping spree is tasting the Singaporean local food. The mind blowing variety of food I saw while I was there left me in awe! I’m quite picky about food but then again, I couldn’t resist trying the authentic local cuisine. I shall start this series of posts with some street food and snacks I encountered during my short stay in Singapore.
Old Chang Kee is a snack chain in Singapore that specializes in curry puffs and deep fried snacks. You can smell the fried goodies from a distance and ooh do they smell wickedly delicious!

Some of the snacks at Old Chang Kee.

My plate – Spring’O, Gyoza OnStik, Chicken Wrap OnStik, Crab Claw OnStik.

Next is dessert! Do you like ice cream? Me too! How about ice cream wafers or even ice cream sandwiches? You can’t miss those traditional ice cream vendors if you’re strolling along Orchard Road!

I had raspberry ripple ice cream with wafers.

And here’s what an ice cream sandwich looks like.

The slab of ice cream is wrapped in a slice of soft colored bread.

It’s kinda weird to have ice cream with bread, right? I felt the same way too but once you have a bite, you ask for more! Hahahha yeah that’s how delish it was!
There’s still so many photos to resize and upload but I’m feeling sleepy already. More yummylicious posts this weekend! Stay tuned people. ![]()

Ice cream + bread is heavenly!! I do that once in a while too.
Well, to some it may sound weird to have ice cream with bread but over here, it is quite a norm already!

Is it worth it? to be there at the gss? i’m tempted to go in the future (need to work first) if my folks go to singapore again..ced is going this yr with my folks.n nouvoté sa since you know how he never travelled and makes “wish list” of stuffs to bring back home for home. line revine ti prince la since we’re all gone.

Have u tried deep fried ice cream before?
To Manju,
Oh no worries! Ice cream won’t give you a brain freeze! But if you want to experience a brain freeze I suggest you have a sip of the slurpee at 7-eleven! Now that is what I call a mega brain freeze!
p.s : missed you too!
Glad you enjoyed your shopping holidays
Did you prefer SG or KL?
I just ate a curry (potato) puff from Old Chang Kee hehe. You haven’t tried the onstik squid, have you?? I loooove this one!!! And I aways buy their spring rolls <3 Very crispy!
My friend also wanted to try the bread ice cream when he came over here
I seldom have the bread one … I normally just take the cone if ever I buy any
\”
To Kit,
Old Chang kee is addictive and I love their OnStik snacks! I didn’t try their cured bbq beef though. Don’t remember seeing it in the Singapore outlets o.O
Heheheh same same! Whenever I saw those ice cream sandwiches on Asian food blogs, I was always like.. *how fascinating! I have to try this someday* So yeah I tried and this is how ice cream sandwiches conquered me <3
To day-dreamer,
We don’t have ice cream with bread in Mtius. I think ice cream bread sandwiches are popular mostly in Asia, right??
To La Pingouine,
It was really nice indeed especially that it’s so hot on the streets.
*nostalgie* Je veux repartir là-bas!!
To Kyels,
Ok I’m gonna say something stupid but I think ice cream with bread is fascinating
Only stumbled across those in food blogs before but now I know what ice cream sandwiches taste like.
To Cheryl,
Shopping loot was mostly handbags, shoes, cosmetics and tons of clothes! Too lazy to take pics right now hahha
GSS is definitely worth it. You just have to know when and where to shop, hunt for best deals and enjoy the shopping!! Ok this might be silly but I think you don’t know you’re a shopaholic until you get carried away by the sales. That’s how I felt anyway! And now I know the true meaning of “shop shop shop till you drop”!
You should totally go during the GSS. No need to wait for the folks to travel to Sg.. I can go with you
To Ketty,
Lol ey dipain la comment dir gato pandan imper mais pas aussi doux! Imagine pandan cake ek la glace!! To pou contan toi

To Carine,

Arghhh I loveee squid! Remind me to have it next time I come, ok?
And yeahh their spring rolls are awesome! Me liked! Omg… craving for old chang kee now! T_T
Hmm.. is the onstik squid the sotong one?? I wasn’t sure if sotong was squid so I didn’t take this one
Ice cream with bread looks peculiar to people who have never encountered it before XD To croir morisien pou contan si introduce sa ici? lol
I’ve heard about the ‘shopping season’ in Singapore and I’ve always wanted to go. Hopefully, in the next 5 years!
Looking forward to seeing more pictures…that ice-cream sandwich looks yummy!
ur making me salivate…I wish i can go to the sale sometime soon too..maybe as a next birthday gift if my husb is generous..but i cant see it happen soon though..good that u enjoyed it! i am waiting for baby to be born to plan my next trip to mauritius!
It’s true that one cannot judge a particular dish by just looking at it. One must try the dish first before saying if it is good or not.
@ Angele
I also prefer SG
Haha not sure about whether Morisien pou content ice cream with bread. To capave essaye ouvert ene ti business haha
Pandang cake assez popular a Morice? Coz sorti depli SG sa non?
welcome back Angele. am drooling over your pictures. It must have been so nice to go away for a few days.
To Pretentious Teeterings,
Haven’t had time to upload all the pictures but will do soon.
GSS is a must for every shopaholic so… GO GO GO!!
To Azra,
So when is the baby due? You guys must be pretty excited, eh?
To Patrick,
*agrees*
I’m quite picky with food but I also like to try new stuff so..
To Carine,
Squid c’est calamar ca
I think pandan cake originates from Malaysia. It’s becoming popular in Mauritius and a lot of people call it “gato vert”! (=.=”)
Should try baking a pandan cake someday. Do you like pandan?? En fait, pandan la c’est juste sa green coloring la sa. Sinon le gateau meme s’apelle ene chiffon cake, non?
I love pandan cake!!
To anju,
Thanks
Those 2 weeks were amazing! Wish I could go back soon again.. hahaha
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…. *jealous*

@Angele
At least you are more adventurous than most Canadians :-)
To bosscat,
When you pay for my airline ticket :p
